Critics Consensus

Though The Nines doesn't solidify as well as writer/director John August would hope for, Ryan Reynolds's strong performance makes each of the film's intriguing segments worth watching.

Let's avoid such extremes, and note merely that he's made a film that's funny ha-ha as well as funny peculiar; an exercise in navel-gazing that tickles all the senses. Go to Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Nov 30, 2007

Definitely worth a look. Go to Full Review Nigel Andrews Financial Times Nov 30, 2007
It is beguilingly cuckoo, though as primitive visually as The Twilight Zone - it was shot in 22 days - and about as profound. Go to Full Review Andrew L. Urban Urban Cinefile Oct 4, 2008
It defies categorisation, which I love, and defies logic, which is very European. But it's also clever, funny and compelling Go to Full Review Wesley Lovell Cinema Sight Sep 30, 2008

An interesting, if high minded, concept film that is nothing without its performers. Go to Full Review James O'Ehley Sci-Fi Movie Page Aug 27, 2008

Ryan W. @SillyGooseHead Jan 17, 2026 This movie was really weird and really bad See more Meri S. @mschroeder Jan 9, 2026 Dnf. It really wasn’t doing much for us. Ending felt like a reach and didn’t totally add up, lowered it a notch. See more Hannah H @RT03614145 Jul 14, 2024 I can't understand what I just wasted an hour and a half watching See more Cash S @RT55810087 Feb 26, 2024 The Nines is a creative and trippy film. I found myself very invested from beginning to end. All of the performances are great in here. This is the first serious role that I've seen Ryan Reynolds in, and he absolutely nailed it. I felt like this film did a pretty good job at handling these existential themes. I do feel like the movie gets a little too trippy for it's own good, and sometimes the quirkiness didn't work for me. The ending is shocking and emotional, but some parts of the film weren't as satisfying as I would've liked. I also felt like there were some pacing issues especially in the beginning. I really liked this film, even if there was some missed potential. See more Read all reviews
