Critics Consensus

A bleak, handsomely mounted Western, The Thicket overcomes a few familiar genre beats with a gritty story, immersive frontier visuals, and a scene-stealing performance from Juliette Lewis.

It’s probably somewhat too stately. But it is an odd, mostly compelling yarn, and acted with gusto and shot with real physical commitment to the wide open spaces and raw chill of the elements.

The Thicket is an awful story, in a great way.

Juliette Lewis steals the show in a bleak, action-heavy Western that lacks the depth to match its gritty visuals.

The movie constantly asks, “Are the good guys really all that good?” Again, this isn’t necessarily an original concept for the Western genre, but director Elliott Lester handles the idea with grace and delicacy that make the question feel genuine.

It’s a thought-provoking meditation on survival and integrity in a world teetering on the edge of collapse.

I will say, the trailer made the film seem like it would have more high octane action, but whats in the trailer in terms of action is in the movie and nothing more. But, the writing, acting and cinematography made up for it. My wife and I really enjoyed the film, so much I actually want to read the book now.

So fantastic. Dinklage is awesome, of course, but not even the best part. Levon Hawke is a revelation.

Not sure why theres a lack of promotion for this movie. I didnt even know it was coming out. I saw it tonight and Im glad I did because its an exceptional film. The whole cast did great. Peter Dink stood out and really nailed this roll.
