See more Robert H. @Rwhobbs198 May 23 There’s Something About Mary (1998) is one of the defining comedies of the late 90s, packed with the crude but memorable humor that made films of that era so popular. While the ending itself feels fairly inevitable, the real fun comes from the outrageous journey getting there, as an awkward teen romance gone disastrously wrong turns into a reunion years later filled with chaos and embarrassment. The movie thrives on over-the-top comedic moments, many of which became iconic for the time. Watching it again as an adult, some of the jokes land even better than they did back then. I was 13 when it released, and the humor definitely hits differently at 40. It’s goofy, crude, and at times ridiculous, but it remains comedy gold from that era and still holds up surprisingly well today. A genuinely fun watch. Ted hires a private investigator to locate Mary, and in the process, the investigator also falls for Mary. Based on the reviews and critical acclaim, I had high hopes for this movie. But I have to say, I was disappointed. The story was good, but the direction was lacking and the "humor" was too vulgar for my taste. I think I only laughed once during the whole film. The only saving grace was the story and the acting, especially by the beautiful Cameron Diaz. Ben Stiller gave a good performance as well, and the chemistry between the two was strong. Overall, I was slightly disappointed by this movie, as I had high expectations for it. However, it is not the worst I have seen, and it held a lot of potential.
