Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished years earlier. Hoping to solve the mystery of her father's disappearance, Croft embarks on a perilous journey to his last-known destination -- a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. The stakes couldn't be higher as Lara must rely on her sharp mind, blind faith and stubborn spirit to venture into the unknown.

Critics Consensus

Tomb Raider reboots the franchise with a more grounded approach and a star who's clearly more than up to the task -- neither of which are well served by an uninspired origin story.

Roar Uthaug (The Wave) directed; his work feels derivative of Steven Spielberg's first two Indiana Jones movies, though not half as entertaining.

If you're coming to Tomb Raider, you're not coming for the common sense. You're coming for the action sequences. Luckily, Vikander kills in every segment she's in.

But there's little [Roar Uthaug] can do with Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons's script (derived largely from the "third era" of the video game), which functions like a treasure map without resonance or mystery.

Tomb Raider hardly proves that videogame movies can stand up there with cinema’s finest, but it is an engaging, exciting film that sets Vikander up well as an action star if she wants to be one.

Tomb Raider is a step in a the right direction for a genre desperately needing a turn-in critical performance. While nothing to boast about with 34 films in the genre thus far, the 50 percent rating on rotten tomatoes moves the needle up.

A fun and often times thrilling action-adventure with a strong, believable female protagonist .

It's okay if you like the Tomb Raider franchise, but doesn't add much.

I really do think they chose the right actress, but I found it almost impossible to get past how they set up the story. IMO it made her the most unrelatable and immature she’s ever been.

Not what a Tomb Raider movie should be. Instead of being charismatic, educated, smart and confident woman, Lara is a whiny, scared and almost constantly overwhelmed girl thrown around by circumstances.

This movie was quite surprisingly good and much better than the previous installments. I don't understand the bad reviews.

Poorly scripted fiction loosely based off the video games. Rather than an intelligent heroine, we get an ignorant girl who makes all the wrong choices, starting with her choice to let her family estate go into disrepair with the possibility of getting sold off because she refuses to believe her father is dead. The writers tried to make her down to earth when in reality she was just ignorant and easily taken advantage of. The plot was lacking and the story dragged. Dont waste your time.
