David Fincher provides stellar shots that mediate the angsty sentiment of heightened vigilance and incites a source of paranoia to the characters involved. Overall, the ensemble understands to portray those wavering feelings that the case entails, shifting between dogged defiance for catharsis and the unsteady but cold grip of the Zodiac killer haunting the obssesive investigators' failure to solve the puzzle. Although the movie pervades a chilling and oppressive mood, its pace makes it an overloaded and messy experience, where the constant jumps and back and forth between characters, as well as the mass of information, not only confuse but also frustrate the viewer with regard to the actual case. David Fincher masterfully turns a nearly three-hour investigation into something that flies by, keeping you completely invested from beginning to end. The attention to detail and commitment to the true story make it all the more compelling, while the stacked cast—led by Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., and Mark Ruffalo—delivers exceptional performances across the board.
