Chris S @Janomi Jul 19 Broken Arrow has its moments as a fun mid-’90s action ride, mostly because John Travolta gives the movie such a big personality. He plays Deakins with a cocky, smug, slightly unhinged energy, and every smirk, taunt, and overconfident line reading makes him entertaining to watch. The stolen-nuclear-weapon premise is simple, clear, and instantly dramatic. Once the bombs are loose, the movie becomes a fast-moving chase through deserts, mines, helicopters, trains, and military coverups. John Woo gives it plenty of style and momentum, with explosions, slow motion, gunfights, and heightened action energy. Christian Slater works as a solid straight-arrow contrast to Travolta, keeping the hero side grounded while Deakins goes bigger. The problem is that the plot is ridiculous, with lots of convenient escapes and action logic. It is entertaining, but more silly and stylish than sharp or suspenseful.
