Critics Consensus

As effectively anti-war as movies can be, Come and See is a harrowing odyssey through the worst that humanity is capable of, directed with bravura intensity by Elem Klimov.

The movie is terrible and pitiable. Klimov manages, as I say, to convey the authentic relentlessness of nightmare. Go to Full Review

The movie is a succession of brutally sincere "art" assaults, jammed together like the poorly articulated cars of an old freight train. Go to Full Review

This is filmmaking of enormous power and feeling even if the film's length mitigates against it. Go to Full Review

It was a punishing experience watching Come and See, but that does not mean it’s an unforgiving one. It is a film I may not ever watch again, but it is one I’m ultimately grateful for and one I doubt I will ever forget. Go to Full Review

Come and See is a nightmare. It’s a rare film, along with select company like Lost Highway, unnervingly accurate in mimicking the powerlessness and ceaseless torment of the worst nighttime experiences. Go to Full Review

David G @DavidGarvin 6h Come and See is less "War Movie" and more "Horror Movie". And not a hack and slash type, but rather one of those rare horrific films that grabs you by the neck. The horrific part of the scenes depicted in the film are that much worse knowing that such atrocities did happen. This film, made some 40 years after the end of the war, shows just how deeply scarred the USSR was by the war against Germany. One could argue that those scars still exist. See more Gabriel KP. See more dogbert65 Jan 15 Very disappointed in this "masterpiece". I was looking forward to seeing this after the RT ratings and other reviews. As a WWII history buff, this film should have a treat....it wasn't. Slow, meandering plot. The interaction between the lead character and the young girl is pointless. This movie could have been 45 minutes shorter. Maybe this is the Russian film DNA, but I was pretty disappointed. Giving it a generous 2.5 stars. See more Hatdogcheesedog @RottenFish Jan 3 Its a good movie, but a movie I'll never ever want to see again. Watching this movie will make you understand why Dostoevsky went insane looking at that dead christ painting. A slow start but an end that punches you in the gut and stabs you 41 times in the back. It almost feels like you’re watching a horror movie almost. Showing the true cruel reality of war from a civilian perspective. Which is witnessed on a young mind, during these atrocities committed in Eastern Europe. See more Read all reviews
