A crushing disappointment, more so since it turned out to be the final screen credit for the great George Pal. Go to Full Review

David K 3d Despite all the criticism this film had during its release and later, if taken on its own terms, it's actually somewhat entertaining. Could it have been better? Absolutely. We'll see how the remake goes (if, in fact, it's starring the Rock). See more John C. @cyclone259 3d I saw this gem in the theater as a 5 year old (my grandmother would only let us watch G-rated movies). Back then, I was enthralled by the SFX (well, the glowing green snakes… hey, I was 5 and Star Wars had yet to be released). The overt, yet subdued sexuality didn’t register with me at the time I first saw it. I rewatched it recently and it did stand out, but even if the innuendos were there, that’s as far as it went. No language to speak of… just pure, unabashedly cheesy adventure wrapped in wooden acting and a 1970’s sensibility, despite being set in the 1930’s. I don’t know if I could recommend it to anyone really and it’s definitely not at the top of screenwriter George Pal’s best work. This was pre-Indiana Jones globe trotting escapism (I won’t say ‘at its best’, because I believe in telling the truth), but it’s nostalgic for me. See more Anderson O @Platinum2027 Jun 8 Slower in pace, campy, pulpy but for the 50 year anniversary, the appearance and esthetic aged well not the performances. The iconic code of Doc Savage and his Fabulous Five is the most timeless part of the movie. Superhero movies have certainly come a long way in this release by Warner. See more DanTheMan 2 Apr 4 A Superman before Superman. Doc Savage is a possessor of a brilliant intellect, enhanced strength and a remote base of operations called the Fortress of Solitude, and yet, despite having all the makings of a pulpy cult classic, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze ultimately dies on the vine it swings from in all its bronzed but buffoonish glory. Chasing the same tone as the Adam West Batman series, intentional camp demands either genuinely funny gags or a resolutely straight face, or both if you're lucky, sadly this film has neither. It isn't nearly as funny, ironic or spoofy as it thinks it is, nor does it have the discipline to tone things down and let the ridiculousness of its situations carry the laughs. Not helping matters is the depressingly flat lighting and mind-numbing pacing because even though there are plenty of action scenes and thrilling set pieces, it all feels completely disjointed, jumping from one scene to the next without giving us enough time to fully absorb what's happening. The directing isn't awful but the editing does it no favours. I will say that the film sports a wonderful cast, especially Ron Ely as the titular character, but even they can't save this cliché-ridden script and, worst of all, the music, a hackneyed nightmare attempt at grating irony if there ever was one. Although mildly enjoyable to fans of pulp magazines, old comics, radio and serial heroes with its nostalgia for 1930s culture, this one sadly misses the mark for me and could have done with a few more years of brewing before coming out in a film landscape that would have eaten it up tenfold. It's a real tell that this film ends with a stinger saying Doc Savage will return and we haven't seen him again since, The Man of Bronze could have been a real cult classic but it flounders in its execution. See more CodyZamboni Z @CodyZamboni 07/06/2024 Movie is knowingly campy, silly, cheap, and dull, Ron Ely has zero charisma in the title role See more Steve D 08/10/2023 I don't think it is in on the joke, and the joke isn't funny.
