Kevin A. Ranson

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

What his grammar school teachers called underachieving, Kevin A. Ranson called being bored to tears and spent every possible second making up projects to fuel his unattended creativity. After discovering nothing interesting at college other than movies and role-playing games, Kevin escaped from West ?By God? Virginia to travel the world for six years on the US Navy?s dime while compiling ideas for books, games, and screenplays. Now from his home page at ThinkingSkull.com, he owns/manages MovieCrypt.com as a certified (or certifiable) film critic endorsed by the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org). He also works as a freelance game writer/designer when not working on his indie role-playing game at KindlingMoon.com. Kevin currently resides in Jacksonville, Florida.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026) 92% 4/4 EDIT “... electrifyingly unhinged... O’Connell matches Fiennes energy... the storyline skews much darker... (fans) will enjoy the new revelations... ” – MovieCrypt.com Jan 25, 2026 Full Review 28 Years Later (2025) 88% 3/4 EDIT “Embrace hope, all ye abandoned here... showcases existential volumes to consider... riding more on its suggested potential... a spine-ripping good time for horror fans.” – MovieCrypt.com Jan 19, 2026 Full Review Greenland 2: Migration (2026) 51% 0/4 EDIT “Worst adaptation of Fallout ever... factually foolish in addition to being dreadfully dull. If you're a fan of the original Greenland movie, don't ruin it by enduring this.” – MovieCrypt.com Jan 11, 2026 Full Review Vicious (2025) 44% 1/4 EDIT “... doesn't leave its victim to their own devices, instead prodding them into action with dark visions and cruel manipulation. It borders on torture porn... who is the real monster: the box's creator or the filmmakers?” – MovieCrypt.com Oct 19, 2025 Full Review TRON: Ares (2025) 53% 4/4 EDIT “... pure spectacle, flavored with just enough story and plot... the most unbelievable part... is modelling the perfect soldier on Jared Leto instead of Arnold Schwarzenegger. ” – MovieCrypt.com Oct 9, 2025 Full Review HIM (2025) 30% 1/4 EDIT “... the convoluted metaphor keeps changing... waiting (and waiting) for the other hoof to drop... the filmmakers had no idea how to end it, so it just sort of does.” – MovieCrypt.com Oct 2, 2025 Full Review How to Train Your Dragon (2025) 77% 4/4 EDIT “Exceeds the original by sticking to a little more of "this" (I just gestured at everything)... thanks for everything, you selfless reptile.” – MovieCrypt.com Jun 19, 2025 Full Review Ballerina (2025) 75% 3/4 EDIT “Better than Parabellum, shorter than Chapter 4, and everything fans love about John Wick... it's essentially Lady Wick, a woman of focus. ” – MovieCrypt.com Jun 16, 2025 Full Review The Phoenician Scheme (2025) 77% 2/4 EDIT “... ends up dull and contrived. This film could be treacherous if anything significant happened. Myself, I feel very safe.” – MovieCrypt.com Jun 12, 2025 Full Review The Life of Chuck (2024) 80% 4/4 EDIT “A reaffirmation of life through the lens of the inevitable... cherishing each precious moment of being mortal... (as) truly something special.” – MovieCrypt.com Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Lilo & Stitch (2025) 72% 3/4 EDIT “Less explosions, more heart, and middling nostalgia. Fans who remember the original may not love all the changes... but the additional infused charm go a long way toward an acceptable compromise.” – MovieCrypt.com Jun 6, 2025 Full Review Bring Her Back (2025) 89% 4/4 EDIT “Intriguing, wince-worthy, and fearless... it feels frighteningly true, and that’s about as a high a complement as one can give to horror.” – MovieCrypt.com May 31, 2025 Full Review Final Destination Bloodlines (2025) 92% 4/4 EDIT “... the best of the series overall, balancing characterization, ensemble interactions, and story to make it more than setup, kill, repeat. Pulls out all the stops... and puts in a few, too.” – MovieCrypt.com May 17, 2025 Full Review Until Dawn (2025) 52% 2/4 EDIT “Enjoy a couple of decent jump scares, then cringe at the (dull and indecisive) narrative... (although) the production design looks ready-made for Halloween Horror Nights...” – MovieCrypt.com May 17, 2025 Full Review Clown in a Cornfield (2025) 74% 3/4 EDIT “Subvert a few expectations, toss some raw meat to the horror fans, and you've got the makings of a good-enough drive-in midnight feature that already has two sequel books teed up for a film trilogy.” – MovieCrypt.com May 17, 2025 Full Review Thunderbolts* (2025) 88% 4/4 EDIT “They're not your classic heroes, they're the other guys: Thunderbolts* is Marvel's Mystery Men.” – MovieCrypt.com May 12, 2025 Full Review Sinners (2025) 97% 4/4 EDIT “... much longer than needed, but you won't mind. It's an excuse to stay in Cooglerland for a few extra minutes... and it keeps going until the very last frame. 666 words, 4 minutes read time.” – MovieCrypt.com Apr 18, 2025 Full Review The Amateur (2025) 62% 3/4 EDIT “Malik is perfectly suited to this role... unfolds like a cloak and dagger version of "A Christmas Carol"... enjoyable as an updated and calculating throwback.” – MovieCrypt.com Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Drop (2025) 83% 4/4 EDIT “Brilliant setup ; fantastic payoff. More of a who's-doing-it than a whodunit... steadily builds momentum until it stomps on the gas, and all you can do by then is hold on.” – MovieCrypt.com Apr 13, 2025 Full Review Death of a Unicorn (2025) 52% 4/4 EDIT “It’s understandable if organ harvesting isn’t your particular brand of humor and horror, but if The Monkey tripped your trigger last month, you’re in for a rainbow-flavored treat.” – MovieCrypt.com Mar 30, 2025 Full Review Companion (2025) 93% 3/4 EDIT “... using (the first reveal) as a springboard into sneaky surprises and clever twists... serves as a spiritual sequel to Ex Machina, where power is still fleeting.” – MovieCrypt.com Feb 24, 2025 Full Review The Monkey (2025) 77% 4/4 EDIT “Two words: f***ing delightful.” – MovieCrypt.com Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Wolf Man (2025) 48% 2/4 EDIT “... atmosphere and soundscape were on-point... seems to hint at more than comes to fruition... but it’s frustratingly nowhere to be found, and that undermines the entire production.” – MovieCrypt.com Feb 17, 2025 Full Review Captain America: Brave New World (2025) 46% 3/4 EDIT “An overstuffed espionage thriller... falls short of greatness, perfectly watchable but too focused on what-comes-next rather than happening-right-now in an eerily Iron Man 2 kind of way.” – MovieCrypt.com Feb 15, 2025 Full Review Heart Eyes (2025) 78% 3/4 EDIT “... brisk and fun (but) can’t fully escape its cross-genre Scream-like inspirations... the audience (is) in on the joke (so) what's wrong with a little blood and chocolate?” – MovieCrypt.com Feb 2, 2025 Full Review
