Alan G @AlanG469 11 hrs ago Oddly, this was my first time seeing Dean. He has that sense of danger, but this is not on the same level as Giant and Rebel, which tackle more timely themes. See more Robert P @Superbad Sep 17, 2026 East of Eden = a *4.5* star Movie! See more Joel H @786Joel Sep 4, 2026 Maybe I’m just not a fan of James Dean. This is the second of his "big three" movies that I’ve seen, and while I liked it more than Rebel Without a Cause, I still didn’t really like it. Dean is too old to be acting this young. I looked it up, and Cal is supposed to be in his late teens during the events of this story. In this movie, he seems more like a mentally ill adult than a rebellious kid. And while it’s not Julie Harris’ fault they cast her to play the part of a 17-year-old girl, she’s almost 30 in this role. Yes, I get it, it’s the Cain & Abel story, but East of Eden is an overrated melodrama. See more Vincent S @Vin_E_At_The_Movies Aug 10, 2026 Though the least interesting and successful film of Dean’s career this is still another outstanding Dean performance. I felt some of the melodrama was too much but Raymond Massey, Richard Davalos, Jo Van Fleet and Julie Harris are incredibly sublime. Sometimes compelling, sometimes lagging. See more Markus A @Excalibur866 Jun 14, 2026 What is this actually trying to prove. At odds with the novel it became a vehicle for a mumbling, stumbling, hands in pocket, sulky James Dean kicking stones in every scene. A classic writer’s work reduced to fodder for a poorly performing naive actor who is trying to ‘out-Brando’ Brando which only Brando can do with pathetic repetition. Some good characters in this but it is over-shadowed by the overly-hyped and inadequate Dean’s performance. See more Ede H. @EdeJean Jan 1, 2026 I loved the book. The movie didn’t live up to that. Great acting, good story, just not enough. See more Read all reviews
