A blood-splattered history lesson jacked on adrenaline as the Woo regular Tony Leung leads a quirky trio of quick-fisted ne’er-do-wells into an increasingly demented series of shoot-outs and massacres. Go to Full Review

It is a crime thriller, a wartime action film set in Vietnam, but it offers something other than the usual Hollywood perspective; it is a parable of greed comparable to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and even a kind of romantic melodrama. Go to Full Review

John Woo draws liberally from the trove of Vietnam War movies, staging epic battles in villages with overt cues to Apocalypse Now and mirroring The Deer Hunter’s structure of slow psychological unraveling among friends. Go to Full Review

The Killer and Hard Boiled are better known -- and better, period -- but in some ways, it’s Bullet in the Head that feels like John Woo’s magnum opus. Go to Full Review

It's hardly a bad attempt at putting together an exciting adventure for these characters, but some of its developments really needed a little more thought put into them in order to integrate them into the story better. Go to Full Review

Eschewing the glamorous contract killers of Woo's previous films, Bullet has its carefree and idealistic characters repeatedly in untenable situations, bound to corrupt them. Shooting their way out is a temporary solution which only digs them in deeper. Go to Full Review

JP H @JohnnyHardboiled 4 days ago It's really thoughtful, a John Woo film more in deep philosophical thought about what life is about relationships and how the modern world's values like money can tear those and a person apart, of course amongst the BULLET HELL of a John woo film lol. Good, but not great. The Killer and Hardboiled are better See more Thomas V @TomVee Aug 22, 2026 This has to be John Woo's best. It's not perfect, but it is an absolutely sweeping epic surrounding a simple story of three friends from the hood who's friendship gradually self-destructs over years of incredibly bad luck and incredibly poor decisions, Tony Leung and Jacky Cheung both give stellar performances and create characters we care about, enough that we keep hoping they'll be spared their inevitable end even as that inevitability becomes increasingly obvious. There are many fantastic action sequences of course, with top notch editing and some great camera work. This is not a fun watch; it's absolutely relentless in shifting its tone to be increasingly grim, so much so that any time you think for even a moment this trio might finally get a break, it gets worse. And it tries to say too much; it's just a lot. Well worth seeing, however. See more Allan C @RT15713161 Jul 4, 2026 Heroic Bloodshed meets ‘Namsploitation Bullet in the Head (1990) ***1/2 Bullet in the Head is an ambitious but uneven blend of war drama, crime saga, and John Woo's signature heroic bloodshed. Its shifting tones don't always cohere, but the film is packed with striking imagery, powerful performances, and a spectacular finale that ranks among Woo's best action sequences. Flawed, fascinating, and well worth seeing for fans of Woo at his most audacious.
