What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though it offers mild entertainment through campy one-liners and the overacting of the late Raul Julia, Street Fighter's nonstop action sequences are not enough to make up for a predictable, uneven storyline.

...it's the cinematic equivalent of one of those big, shiny, unwieldy contraptions your parents used to spend hours putting together only to shatter within seconds of your first touch. Go to Full Review

After the relative respectability of "TimeCop" and "Hard Target," "Street Fighter" (which contains no street fighting) is a big step backward for Van Damme, recalling his earliest days in low-budget brawlers for Cannon films. Go to Full Review

I wasn't able to follow much of the narrative [Steven E. de Souza has] constructed, but I didn't care, and neither will anybody who'll see this film because they like to play the video game upon which it's based. Go to Full Review

Writer-director Steven E. de Souza has figured out how to make an action picture that is pure action - no messy character development or other distractions here. Go to Full Review

In an effort to work all of these characters into the plot, the movie has become incomprehensible, though I doubt anyone will care, since the movie is one big blizzard of karate chops, and that seems to be the point. Go to Full Review

Street Fighter is plain boring. Frequently, it seems, even actors are only going through the motions. It's a movie void of passion, which is the one ingredient Van Damme's movies usually have. Go to Full Review

Timothy B @RT54507179 Sep 18, 2026 Why? Dear god why. It’s like it wanted to be dumber and worse than any action movie that came before it. The cast is all over the place, with Jean Claude Van Damme clearly fueled by cocaine from behind the scenes reports. However, the late, great Raul Julia is brilliant as M. Bison, giving the kind of over the top performance only a professional actor like he could deliver. Behind the camera, writer/director Steven E. de Souza crafts a mess of a movie, with the biggest problem ditching the street fighter story for a military action one. As a result, characters from the game are shoehorned in strange ways, from Chun Li being a reporter to DJ a computer hacker. That being said, the action is fun if a bit crazy, with some solid set designs and pieces. Overall, not a good movie but a good time in a so bad its good way.
