The Quick and the Dead has an entertaining premise and a terrific cast, yet its thin characters and shallow drama keep it from ever becoming more than a curiosity. See more Rl T @RT92191138 Jul 16 Some clever gun work and a superb performance from Gene Hackman as the baddie can't overshadow a weak plot, substandard acting, and Sharon Stone's desperate attempts to convince us we should care about her character or backstory. Made not long after her breakout hit with 'Basic Instinct', she tries to bring seduction and sex appeal to her part- but it comes across as tacky and a means to distract us from a general lack of substance. Throw in Russell Crowe, a young Dicaprio and an all-star lineup into the mix- you'd think this Western might be a winner. Sadly, cheesy lines, stunted delivery and a lack of suspense quickly derail what might have been a fun movie. It is well made and has that distinctive Raimi style but I don’t like the concept, it really lacks engagement for me. It’s basically let’s make a feature about wild west duelling and not much else. Whilst this is entertaining it is so forgettable. It is well acted and has good characters but without a story it just gets lost. Perfectly average. Sharon Stone is solid as the lead and is surrounded by a fantastic supporting, from Gene Hackman in a fantastic villain turn while Russel Crowe & Leonardo DeCaprio shine in early roles. Behind the camera, Sam Raimi delivers every trick in his book, making an original western unlike most. While that plot is not as tight as it can be, its still a fun watch and one of Raimi's best.
