Critics Consensus

Distractingly violent and historically dodgy, Mel Gibson's Braveheart justifies its epic length by delivering enough sweeping action, drama, and romance to match its ambition.

The film talks the stirring talk, but it can't quite walk the walk. Gibson's direction is passable, but critically absent is the panache which sweeps us up and off wherever he wants to take us.

The picture is easily an hour too long, and that's a shame since Braveheart at its best -- especially in its breathtaking battle sequences -- is very good indeed.

Despite a formidable effort and occasional grace, there's something cowardly about Braveheart -- it's an aspiring giant with a diminutive soul.

Braveheart’s secret sauce though is really its magnificent soundtrack. Evocative and complementary in the way a movie soundscape should be, James Horner’s bagpipe, string and percussion-filled score adds to virtually every scene.

Altogether, as epics go, Braveheart is worthy of a skirl of the pipes and a toast in Glenmorangie.

The major failing of Braveheart is that it never for a moment convinces us that we've invaded a remote and alien culture. Its success is that it recaptures the high ground of movie heroism.

A timeless classic that shows the inner workings of the true spirit. A must see, at least once in a lifetime if not way more movie. Way up there with the likes of Casino and Shawshank Redemption kind of viewing. Mel Gibsons performance is stunning.

Epicness from Mel Gibson. Great battle scenes, great acting and dialogue, very good drama, and entertainment that manages to be sophisticated and popcorn-worthy at the same time. What a noteworthy and unforeseen original classic!

Braveheart will no doubt have it's critics which may question the film's historic validity but that aside everything else within it is simply superb. Every scene carries a very real feel to it with an unrelenting beautiful score throughout. Gibson's portrayal of Wallace is deeply heartfelt and deserves high praise for his obvious personal connection with the character. Outstanding from start to finish.
