What to Know

Critics Consensus

Overlong and underpowered by cheap production values, Carrie's small screen adaptation wastes a capable lead in Angela Bettis on a stale retelling of Stephen King's novel.

Poor little Carrie didn't need the big buildup. She's too familiar as it is, and despite a worthy star, she's all dressed up with no new, intriguing place to go. Go to Full Review

This version by director David Carson and writer Bryan Fuller spoils the mood by unleashing too much too soon, including an early barrage of silly digital effects. Go to Full Review

Everything in the TV version, from the flabby script to the room-temperature performances, is inferior to the original. Go to Full Review

No, it doesn't top the 1976 Brian De Palma film version that starred Sissy Spacek, but it brings the classic story of teen alienation to a new generation, and does so with some nice innovations thanks to Bryan Fuller's script. Go to Full Review

Ricardo D @RT43154676 4 days ago A forgettable film. A script heavy on effects and intense scenes should never have been made with TV-style editing. The effects were poor even back then—let alone now. Although this version stays closer to the book in some respects, comparisons to the original are inevitable. And so, despite the talent of the actress playing Carrie—though she still doesn't measure up to the original—and the inclusion of a more involved Sue and an alternate ending, the film remains entirely forgettable. While the TV production values do hamper the film somewhat, what shines through are the rather more “book accurate” storytelling, the film’s tone is about as sad & somber as it’s 1976 theatrical counterpart & Angela Bettis won my heart over with her sweet, sincere, tragic & raw performance! See more Max M @livmackenzie Feb 27, 2026 The 2002 adaptation of Carrie offers a surprisingly thoughtful and character-focused take on Stephen King’s story. Angela Bettis brings a raw, almost uncomfortable realism to Carrie, making her feel fragile yet quietly intense. This version leans more into psychological tension and explores the emotional trauma behind Carrie’s powers in a grounded way. The expanded scenes give more depth to the characters, especially Sue, adding layers of empathy and moral conflict. While it doesn’t have the stylized flair of the 1976 film, it feels intimate and modernized for its time. The prom sequence still delivers, but what stands out most is the emotional aftermath. It’s a darker, more reflective retelling that deserves more appreciation. Its camp its cvnty. See more James B @James_B Jul 5, 2025 The 2002 remake of Carrie is just too long and at most times boring and also has atrocious CGI. See more Read all reviews
