Critics Consensus

If you're in the mood for a fun enough genre film that kills its holiday theme, look no further than the surprisingly astute A Christmas Horror Story.

This smart, zippy, bloody frightster is a Canadian-made gift that will continue to give, in the best possible ho-ho-ho horror way.

Whenever one of the stories begins to generate any real head of steam, viewers are jerked into another one and the whole process starts over again.

Considering it's a crass film timed for the Halloween crowd, "A Christmas Horror Story" is pretty much as horrible as it's supposed to be.

A Christmas Horror Story is an anthology horror movie done right. It takes stories that could almost, but not quite be stretched into full length movies, and bundles them together in a thematic group of short films that work well together.

It's fun, it's scary, it has something for every horror fan out there from the casual fan who will love the accessibility of the stories to the more hardcore nerdy horror fan who will recognize the name of Bailey Downs from the get go.

Fun, festive, gory and consistently creepy, A Christmas Horror Story takes five separate, and very enjoyable, stabs at creating a new mythology for the festive season.

While DJ Dangerous Dan (William Shatner) ruminates on Christmas Eve, other residents of his town face supernatural threats. Oh, and Santa! An anthology in which the stories are linked somewhat and in an interlocking format. Sadly, that means you can't ff to the best one, "Santa vs. the elves." That is the best of the tales and features humor and gore. And, holy cow! Krampus is a specimen! Thankfully the other stories are at least tolerable.

The stories are pretty good, though could do with some of the interconnecting bridges being stronger. There's enough horror-based action to entertain. And the ending! Strong...

This film was not bad at all. Great christmas and horror movie. It was insane and shocking moments and It was a little scary. It was kinda of confused from ending. It was a good shot in making this film.

A horror anthology consisting of four (or five if you include William Shatner) loosely related Christmas stories. Rather than tell each tale in sequence, it is edited to go back and forth between them, but this undermines the suspense because of the loss of momentum. The "elf zombie" one is the most violent and funny, the "possessed boy" the most scary and the "teenagers in the high school" the most confusing.

Unexpected surprise; I wanted to dislike this, but it absolutely grew on me as it progressed. Would watch again.
