As America's stock of athletic young men is depleted during World War II, a professional all-female baseball league springs up in the Midwest, funded by publicity-hungry candy maker Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall). Competitive sisters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) spar with each other, scout Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) and grumpy has-been coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) on their way to fame. Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell co-star as two of the sisters' teammates.

Critics Consensus

Sentimental and light, but still thoroughly charming, A League of Their Own is buoyed by solid performances from a wonderful cast.

It’s a great piece of Hollywood confectionery, and you might well find yourself choking up a little at the end.

Although the denouement must once again wrestle with the introduction from the start, revisiting the decades-later troupe that absolutely doesn’t need to be involved, the film remains inspirational, motivational, nostalgic, sweet, and highly entertaining.

Like now as then, the issue of gender parity remains a hot button issue, but the way Marshall handles it throughout "League" never stoops to melancholy nor lingers too long to detract from the central premise: sports are for everyone, especially women.

This movie is just a wonderfully indulgent super sentimental time-warp. Taking us back to the 1940s and the 1990s at the same time with pitch perfect storytelling, outstanding performances (both Rosie McDonald and Madonna at their best), nailing the period aesthetic, and a great movie song from Madonna. Honoring real women and bringing just a small sliver of their story to light. It's impressive what dedication and physicality the actors brought to this to make the playing so believable. This movie should not have a rating under 100%. And it was a great launching off point for the amazing series 30 years later that was able to delve into more complex issues and relationships with more time and less social constraints that was a fantastic complement to the original.

Penny Marshall's masterpiece. It was fun seeing some of her actors from her Laverne & Shirley days...and her father in it as well. Charming story. There was a women's baseball league...so it was fun to see a film loosely using that part of history. Tom Hanks is brilliant in anything he does. The remarkable casting for the actors who played them older was spot on. Great film.
