See more Logan D @Greynomad38 11/17/2023 The story of two hapless sad sack novelty salesmen is interspersed with numerous tales of the lives of others. Once I began viewing this I realized it was by the same director of About Endlessness, which I viewed a year or so ago. Much like Anderson and Yorgos Lanthimos he has a definitive stamp he places on his films. His is slow cinema via self contained tableaux, each shot emphasizing long takes. No zooms, no pans, no hand held. There's a thread of loneliness throughout the film but I found the moments spent with Jonathan and Sam to be hilarious. At its best, the film displays the relatable slices of life and thought-provoking musings on the human condition that he knows to deliver so well. Nevertheless, it is marred by several pointless vignettes, occasional sluggishness and the permeating feeling that he is going over the same ground once again - and with the exact same approach. See more isla s @RT89656869 09/04/2022 First off, I hadn't realised this is apparently the 3rd in a trilogy of films, which is the first thing we learn via text on screen at the start of the film. The people depicted all appear literally bright white, as if ghostly figures. It is quite quirky and a bit surreal. The surroundings depicted appear somewhat cartoonish at times, although I'm not sure I can explain why. Something about it makes it seem as if we're witnessing a dream. The comedy present is very much dark comedy but I did find myself laughing at times. It is somewhat bleak in tone but it also features some rousing musical numbers and I found myself quite enjoying it, as I wasn't sure what to expect next, given its quirkiness. It is very bizarre and I feel it contains a number of allegories. Its hard to describe this film otherwise, although it moves at a plodding pace, so if you like fast paced films then this won't be for you. It is very much observational based. I should say that it turns darker and more sombre towards the end. Would I recommend it? yes I would, if your looking for something different and not full of cliches and especially if you like world cinema, then this may interest you. See more jordan m @RT33422384 07/03/2022 This wasn't quite as good as You the Living, but it was definitely better than Songs from the 2nd Floor. All of other vignettes pale in comparison to the ones with the king on his horse visiting the sandwich shop. Comedy-dramas were the drama isn't all that interesting to me end up being remembered as comedies that could've been funnier had they not insisted on introspection and being poignant, and I mention that here because the numerous scenes with the novelty salesmen in them were more sad than anything else. I am relieved to have finished this trilogy and to be moving on to different things. See more Read all reviews
