Set in Italy during WWII, American Army Col. Richard Cantwell, is a bona fide war hero who faces news of his terminal illness with stoic disregard. Determined to spend his weekend in quiet solitude, he commandeers a military driver to facilitate what is likely a final duck hunting trip and visit to his old haunts in Venice. As Cantwell's plans begin to unravel, a chance encounter with a young countess begins to kindle in him the hope of renewal. Based on the last full-length novel Hemingway published in his lifetime, Across The River and Into The Trees captures a fleeting moment of immortality where time stands still. The story contains the great Hemingway themes of love, war, youth and age.

Ortiz and her team subtly embrace the atmosphere of Venice, using mostly natural light and handheld cameras to highlight the unique energy of the Italian city, a place full of so many beginnings and endings. Go to Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture Aug 30, 2024
Ortiz (and screenwriter Peter Flannery) remove what made the novel, for all its massive flaws, unique. Go to Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills Nov 11, 2024
This well-produced but creaky drama feels as ponderous with old-school Symbolic Meaning as something that might’ve been made 70 years ago with Spencer Tracy and Pier Angeli. It wouldn’t have been good then, either. Go to Full Review Devon Webb Spectrum Culture Sep 16, 2024
Italian actress Matilda De Angelis steals the show from her Hollywood co-stars in this melancholic portrait of post-war Venice. Go to Full Review Ruben Peralta Rigaud Cocalecas Sep 10, 2024
Even though this film version omits some of the novel's more vital nuances, it is still an emotional experience that reflects Hemingway's vision with dignity. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Read all reviews

See more Gary G Sep 2, 2024 I very much enjoyed the banter between the two main characters, but the overall story was dark and vague with no clear outcomes/resolutions. See more Sandra M Sep 2, 2024 Very Hemingway: disturbing subject matter, sometimes hard to watch, but a good movie....excellent acting performances. See more Donna Sep 1, 2024 Live Schreiber gave a wonderful, nuanced performance. The scenery was captivating as was the story. I'm ready to read the book which inspired the film.
