Critics Consensus

Alita: Battle Angel's story struggles to keep up with its special effects, but fans of futuristic sci-fi action may still find themselves more than sufficiently entertained.

It's sort of overlong and overstuffed, but Rosa Salazar is quite good.

As spectacle, the film is aces. It welds Rodriguez's eccentric touch with action and special effects to Cameron's mastery of world-building.

If only the story of Alita: Battle Angel had been as impressive as its technical achievements.

Alita: Battle Angel attempts to tell a story that is no doubt complex, but struggles to parse it in a way that offers a clear focus and progress. Yet it’s easy to lose sight of this when you’re enjoying supremely slick fight sequences.

As it is, it’s serviceable, but unremarkable, even among its cinematic brethren of live-action manga or futuristic dystopian works.

Our leading character Alita goes through a lot of development throughout this story, and it is engaging to watch.

A visually spectacular sci-fi action film with impressive world-building, creative combat, and a surprisingly emotional core. Rosa Salazar brings Alita to life with a lot of personality, while the action sequences are easily the highlight. The biggest weakness is the unfinished-feeling story and obvious sequel setup. Some exposition and romance also feel underdeveloped, but the world is so interesting that I wanted more.
