Critics Consensus

Enchanting, sweepingly romantic, and featuring plenty of wonderful musical numbers, Beauty and the Beast is one of Disney's most elegant animated offerings.

Where Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, and Ariel all have a certain level of young adult naiveté to them, Belle is the first Disney heroine who feels like a grown woman.

Yes, it has the innocence that has become a Disney trademark, but there is also an intelligence, sophistication, verve, the kind of kinesis and crackle usually associated with a hit Broadway show.

Beauty and the Beast arrives with a cartload of promises that it is a return to the great days of Disney, the art of animation, blah blah. It delivers in spades.

This Beauty and the Beast is truly lovely, even haunting. It is a feature-length animation of a quality I'd thought lost forever. The people at Disney have long thrown out the word "magic" entirely too carelessly; they should have saved it for this.

It's one of those rare treats that merits the illogical label of "instant classic."

Really great. Another classic. One issue tho, romance between Belle and the Beast was rushed and kind of resembled Stockholm syndrome…

So happy to see classic movies back in theaters, can remember seeing them when I was a kid and seeing them with my family, makes me feel like a kid again, miss my family and wish they could be here to share these moments again.

Rewatched this after the D23 Tale as Old as Time celebration, which made for perfect background while I worked on a craft. This time around I noticed how much Belle's voice sounds like Dorothy's from The Wizard of Oz! It's still a great movie, and hearing more about its legacy at the D23 panel made me appreciate it even more. That said, it left me wanting to revisit the live-action remake again too.
