Soon after losing his salvage job, former naval officer Robinson (Jude Law) assembles a misfit crew of unemployed sailors for a risky mission: Find a sunken Nazi U-boat, rumored to contain a fortune in gold. Promising each man an equal share, Robinson leads the mixed British and Russian crew to comb the depths of the Black Sea. Before long, greed takes hold of a crew already divided along language and cultural lines -- and the fewer men that make it back alive, the more gold to go around.

Critics Consensus

Black Sea may not be particularly deep, but thanks to Kevin Macdonald's judicious direction and a magnetic performance from Jude Law, it remains an efficiently well-crafted thriller.

Not much of it is credible, starting with the hiring of a rusty submarine out of Sevastopol, but it has action and adventure to burn, leavened with bits of humour. Go to Full Review Kristin Tillotson Minneapolis Star Tribune Jan 31, 2015

Too often, moviegoers must choose between character-driven drama and edge-of-your-seat action. "Black Sea" has both, with a gripping performance by Jude Law as their nexus. Go to Full Review Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer Jan 31, 2015

Banke D @RT95775496 May 26, 2026 Wow! Quite the tense thriller! Jude Law delivered. Highly recommend. See more Matthew W @RT05325192 Sep 23, 2025 This movie rules, in a world of snooze fests this thing came out of left field and it was awesome. See more Oscar A @otorresm83 Jun 2, 2025 Emocionante, avaricia, pecado... fabulosa. See more Samuel L @RT19967960 May 22, 2025 A masterpiece, I want the last scene in the submarine as a poster, the lighting just amazing. And the acting is perfect, I'll give a kidney to watch it for the first time again See more kevenquinlan T @RT75276071 May 1, 2025 Ok, I'm a decent fan of Law and he should be doing WAY more movies. This is a GOOD watch, not great and some of the plot points are absurd, especially the murder scene and the laughable nature of everyone on the sub doing everything possible to ensure they all die on it, hahaha. I'm not gonna keep it in my collection but it's worth a spin just to say you've seen it. See more Marc W @NotMarc Mar 17, 2025 The plot has even more holes than the rusty submarine they're acquiring. Like, why the old boat if they have a rich sponsor? How do they get the drive shaft weighing several tons out of the old submarine? (And the gold?) Why are only skeletons left of the dead sailors? Why can their submarine only get to the surface by running the engine and not, like, venting the ballast tanks? How does the gold float at the end? See more Read all reviews
