See more James A @Droz27 May 20 Disappointed in this supposed classic. From the opening scene, I didn't buy Faye or Warren as poor southerners. Their accents were terrible and they were too old for the roles, she looked like a 35 year old moviestar not a 20 year old waitress. Gene Hackman was just as bad, Hollywood actors simply cannot pretend to be street people they have never interacted with irl, let alone southerners. There isn't even a romance between them, just multiple love scenes ending in erectile dysfunction. Nothing feels authentic or realistic, and Hackman's wife is so annoying and looks just like the kid they pick up. Warren Beatty & Faye Dunaway are brilliant in the lead roles, playing the criminals with the perfect mix of charm and viciousness (they clearly love being bank robbers, even when the kill cops to do so). Behind the camera, Arthur Penn crafts a brutal crime film that doesn't glamorize Bonnie & Clyde, as they clearly are robbing banks for their own enjoyment and not out of a Robin Hood mentality (despite saying to the contrary). His violence is brutal for the time and even today, since despite their actions, you do care for them in the end, at least to a certain extent.
