Critics Consensus

With a ridiculous plot and comical acting, checking one's brain at the door is required before watching DOA: Dead or Alive.

Let's hope some special form of punishment awaits the man or woman who came up with the idea of basing movies on video games.

If you only ever see one bad movie about warrior chicks who meet on a tropical isle for a fight contest, make it DOA: Dead or Alive.

Quantcast The plot is but an excuse for a series of elaborately choreographed fight sequences featuring a combination of digital and wire work that somehow manages to feel completely fake despite the obvious physical exertions of its well-trained cast.

So cringey, so ... aimed at horny 13-year-olds and so devoid of any well shot or acted moment I just grew more and more fed up. Not even good to watch for a laugh.

I do not recommend DOA: Dead or Alive, not even to the most hardcore fan of video games. [Full review in Spanish]

Yuen's propensity for impossible computer-generated slow-mo combat action wears thin.

In my opinion, is one of my favorite video game adapted didn’t movie the martial arts and the story is so much fun, I definitely recommend it for fun. Just turn off your brain and just enjoy it. No need to think about it. Just have fun with it and it takes you out. This movie takes you out of your reality and everything is a pure martial arts, action, adventure, movie and if you love video games, you would love this one too.

Compared to the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat adaptations that preceded it, this is a masterpiece. I have yet to see a movie based on a fighting game come even close to DOA. I never played any of the games though so I don't know how loyal this is to the source material. On its own the movie does have enough characters and tropes to keep your attention if you like low budget western martial arts movies. The attractiveness of the characters does do a lot of heavy lifting. Don't focus too much on the story, it's a tournament fighter nothing more.

DOA is one of the Dimension Extreme movies that was amazingly awful. DOA is cast wonderfully. It is one of the Dimension Extreme movies worth watching. Jamie Pressley, Holly Valance, Steve Howey are all great and charming. DOA never pretends to be anything more than a video game brought to life movie. It's cheesy and wonderful.

This movie is AWESOME! Maybe if you never played the video game you will not appreciate it as much but it is great to see the back story of all the characters.
