Critics Consensus

Edgy and seminal, Easy Rider encapsulates the dreams, hopes, and hopelessness of 1960s counterculture.

Ninety-four minutes of what it is to swing, to watch, to be fond, to hold opinions, and to get killed in America at this moment.

Easy Rider is not consistently well made, but it’s purposefully made, and the purpose pays off.

That it still crackles with countercultural energy is down mainly to a soundtrack featuring Jimi Hendrix, the Byrds and Steppenwolf and a cast stuffed with anti-establishment icons.

“Easy Rider” is a socially conscious film and a great debut for actor-writer-director Dennis Hopper, but it is extremely slow and really lacks a stable plot.

The little road movie of hippy bikers was an odyssey for the era of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, of Vietnam and protest marches, of idealism and cynicism stirred by the volatile culture clash of the late sixties.

This movie was great. A great cast of characters and a ending that will blow you away. Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper were my favorite actors but everything was well done. Loved the story and direction. There was some very intense scenes. This movie isn't for everyone but I sure recommend it. Timothy Treakle

I watched it because it's a 17+ 1969 movie. It was slow, boring at times, and just plain weird, like during the tripping scene. But it is worth a watch and it's definitely one of those movies that defined the period it was made in.

For those who admire vintage 1960s, Easy Rider is the ultimate love letter to motorcycling and the open road. This indie classic, which jump-started the careers of young filmmaker Peter Fonda and Burt Reynolds at the time, may have been born from a bygone era. Regardless of its unconventional ending, its memorable soundtrack, stunning cinematography, and countercultural spirit continue to captivate audiences who embrace bike culture and likely inspire new generations of free spirits. Grading: B+
