This documentary tells the story of 27-year-old Ghanaian Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, born with a deformed leg. The disabled are often disdained or even murdered at birth in Africa, but Emmanuel is determined to be a part of society. After receiving a bicycle, thanks to a grant for handicapped athletes, Emmanuel rides across Ghana, challenging stereotypes in the process. Emmanuel travels to America to receive a prosthetic leg and spreads awareness of human rights for the disabled everywhere he goes.

Critics Consensus

A powerful real-life story that's strong enough to overcome the Hollywood touches added in its telling, Emmanuel's Gift is an uplifting celebration of the human spirit.

While Emmanuel's Gift has a moving story to tell, it does so in a less than compelling manner.

Emmanuel's Gift is certainly not a bad movie. It's just a case of good intentions unintentionally interfering with a great story.

[It] is essentially a too-long overcoming-the-odds clip that helps fill up a hole or two in the Olympics TV schedule. Back to you, Bob Costas.

[E]xtra poignant not just because it's true but also because of the refusal of directors Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern to pander to easy sentiment or to place Yeboah on a pedestal of superhumanity...

What an incredibly inspirational film. It starts out slowly, and you begin to wonder if watching this is worth it, but the directors continue to reveal layer after layer of the story that makes what happens all the more amazing. I would highly recommend watching this.

Makes what your going through look easy. You will bawl your eyes out on this one. You will know what you can do when you see him overcome. See his actions turn into beautiful results in front of your eyes. I want that Disability Bill to pass in Ghana. :) I want to be as determined as him.

just saw this. It was really inspiring. And really makes me think, both of what kind of limitations I put on poeple who I think of as unable, and of what I keep my self from doing because I see some sort of barrier. now to just change my thinking. then hopefully my actions will change.
