Critics Consensus

Passionate and powerfully acted, Fruitvale Station serves as a celebration of life, a condemnation of death, and a triumph for star Michael B. Jordan.

First-time director Ryan Coogler chose to tell Grant's story as a narrative instead of a documentary to centre his voice and his life, in the process raising important questions about police brutality and the value of black lives.

Fruitvale Station offers no social remedies, but by recreating Grant's final hours, it actualizes him as a man, not just a rally cry.

A-

While Fruitvale Station is elevated by Jordan's portrayal, the supporting cast, whose characters surround Oscar even during his most internal struggles, is also magnetic to watch.

Coogler’s Fruitvale Station is less about American violence and more about American vulnerability. Specifically, the lack thereof.

Minus a few small stumbles, which can be expected from a first time filmmaker, “Fruitvale Station” is still an emotionally powerful film that puts a spotlight on an unfortunate tragedy.

This was heartbreaking to watch. They really captured the life of a regular person struggling in the city and captured the tragedy of this event. My thoughts are with the family and friends.

Powerful movie that unfortunately portrays a true story. Very well acted. Felt like I was apart of his journey and crew. Was moved to tears towards the tragic end

I had to study this film for class, and I think Michael B Jordan does a great job playing a 22 year old gang banger, we get the impression that he was starting to take strides to turn his life around. The story itself is really sad, director Ryan Coogler really does a great job capturing what life is like when you aren't living an extravagant life. Ryan Coogler does this "stereotype activation" really well. I know about these stereotypes, and they are still embedded deep in my brain, even though I know it's just paranoia I will still be worried when I see a bunch of people dressed a certain way or of a certain colour.

Fruitvale Station is a powerful and deeply moving film that hits you right in the gut. Michael B. Jordan gives an incredible, heartbreaking performance, making Oscar feel like a real person rather than just a name in a headline. The film’s quiet, everyday moments make the ending all the more devastating. Tough to watch, but absolutely worth it.
