Critics Consensus

Gaga: Five Foot Two offers an absorbing glimpse of its superstar subject's backstage life, albeit one weakened by inconsistent focus and a dearth of performance footage.

Gaga: Five Foot Two never quite feels as spontaneous or illuminating as the access would suggest, unless you’re totally gaga about Gaga.

The film is personal in a way that made me uncomfortable -- as if she were meting out chosen bits of information, little hunks of meat tossed into a pit of crazed alligators. The image is flattering to no one.

Gaga is on volatile form... yet can be excused a few nerves given that she will be performing in front of a global audience of 117 million, and there's enough self-awareness to temper the divadom.

As evidenced by the standing ovation and the excited chatter from viewers leaving the theater, [Gaga] was not the only person overcome by the documentary—a powerful, thrilling portal into the life of one of the world's most talented pop stars.

If you want a look inside the life of a very successful singer and meet the woman behind the persona, this one certainly fits the bill.

Despite the different settings in which the disorder affects Gaga, one thing’s clear: it’s not adding to her art, but acting as a hindrance to it. Five Foot Two shows a woman’s pain without any added commentary other than the subjects’ own.

For me, “Gaga: Five Foot Two” (2017) is an amazing documentary that makes me love Lady Gaga even more. This film takes us behind the scenes of her work on her fifth album, JOANNE, allowing us to see a side of her that we’ve never seen before. It showcases the challenges she faces, including the illnesses she endures, giving us an intimate look at her creative process and the pain in her personal life. It also features behind-the-scenes footage of her spectacular performance at the Super Bowl. The storytelling in this documentary is both artistic and honest, allowing us to witness Gaga’s vulnerability alongside her incredible strength. The film doesn’t just share information about her life and work; it makes us feel closer to her in ways we never imagined. For me, “Gaga: Five Foot Two” isn’t just a typical music documentary; it presents an authentic and unfiltered perspective that helps us understand the many dimensions of Lady Gaga. I think it’s a must-watch for anyone who is a fan or anyone looking to understand this extraordinary artist on a deeper level.

I watched this when it originally came out and it was such a deep and personal view into her creative process for the Joanne era. I wish we had one of these for ever album.
