U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause is assigned to lead an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. His convoy, however, is pursued by German U-boats. Tom Hanks is fantastic as the protagonist, but his screenplay is far from truly being one. All dialogues revolve around characters (mostly Hanks') calling naval instructions for most of the runtime and looking either through a window or binoculars.

Very boring. Little action, and the atmosphere felt claustrophobic. Also, I am not a big Tom Hanks fan and the whole movie basically revolved around him.

I'm really surprised that this gets the overall rating it does. While I have always been a fan of most of Tom Hank's work, this movie and the rest of the cast sound like they are reading lines. The acting is flat and unbelievable, it sounds like a rehearsal, not a finished product. I have no issues with the production value of the film, but the directing leaves a lot to be desired. I go as far as to say this is the least impressed I have been with Hank's acting abilities since Bosom Buddies.

Great story. There's zero exposition. While I appreciate that, some parts were hard to follow. I see other reviews complaining about "character development". This is a film that takes place over 48 hours inside of a single ship. Kind of a moronic take imo.

Good movie but I did not like two deviations from Forester's book, The Good Shepherd. First, in the book one of the other escort destroyers (Viktor) was Polish. Why did Hanks make it an English destroyer? In the book you have the sense of Krause being thrust into command of a rag tag international force, which make his successful passage even more heroic. Similarly, in the book Krause's wife had left him-- causing him to request a transfer from San Diego to the East Coast--and he had been "fitted and retained", i.e. passed over for promotion. Why were these facts changed? Once again, he is a man who rises to the occasion. and the scene at the beginning with Elizabeth Shue seemed to be unnecessary fluff to me.
