When Joanna Drayton (Katharine Houghton), a free-thinking white woman, and black doctor John Prentice (Sidney Poitier) become engaged, they travel to San Francisco to meet her parents. Matt Drayton (Spencer Tracy) and his wife Christina (Katharine Hepburn) are wealthy liberals who must confront the latent racism the coming marriage arouses. Also attending the Draytons' dinner are Prentice's parents (Roy E. Glenn Sr., Beah Richards), who vehemently disapprove of the relationship.

Critics Consensus

More well-intentioned than insightful in its approach to interracial marriage, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner succeeds thanks to the fizzy chemistry of its star-studded ensemble.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner toes the line between thoughtful, responsible social commentary and didactic messaging; their contents reflect a genuine national uncertainty...

The movie insidiously charms us into ignoring its defects, and for this the credit must go to a superb cast.

Initially breezy without ever sacrificing any of its points, the picture eventually resorts to a series of static speeches. Luckily, the actors carry the day, particularly Sidney Poitier, Cecil Kellaway and, taking MVP honors, Spencer Tracy.

Stanley Kramer's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner features a masterclass in acting from Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier, and Katharine Hepburn.

Kramer's film does feel like a dusty time capsule. Still, as a film starring some of cinemas greatest actors, the combination of Hepburn, Poitier, and Tracy is still enough to hold the film's artifice at bay -- mostly.

The movie was progressive for it's time, but not as much today. But the acting is still enjoyable. Every actor received an Oscar nod for their performance...except for the legendary Poitier lol

What a performance from Hepburn and Tracy! I love the discomfort this film brings, but also the simple real-life aspect of it. I'm reading Pictures at a Revolution by Mark Harris and watching this with the context of that book brings it to life.

Heard a lot about this movie, finally saw it few days back. Superb acting by everyone and esp. learned a lot about other actors and actress of that era like Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy and their romantic relationship. Highly recommended.

Houghton was not a good cast for Joey. Her acting is simply not believable with all her forced excitement and enthusiasm. They should have cast Sally Field who was virtually the same age as Houghton and already had a lot of experience acting, which Houghton obviously had not. Sidney Poitier, Catherine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy were fantastic. You can’t beat their acting abilities. The scenes these three or any two of these three had together without Houghton present were very rich to watch.

Rewatched this and thought it might be too dated, but was pleasantly surprised. A must for any film lover.
