Critics Consensus

Despite awesome special effects, Hollow Man falls short of other films directed by Paul Verhoeven, degenerating into a typical horror film.

the director keeps uncomfortably aligning the invisible cinemagoer's intrinsic voyeurism with Sebastian's own, showing us to what depths of depravity the male gaze can lead.

A labored, implausible piece of action-movie hack work.

Despite a wealth of special effects and direction by Paul Verhoeven, Mr. Over-the-Top himself, this movie is surprisingly inert, more dull than anything else, with little to recommend it on any level.

Verhoeven's work is always fun to look at it. What's far shoddier is the story itself; it starts poorly and grows progressively worse, finally collapsing into an ending that is so laughably dreadful that I don't want to ruin it.

[The movie] contains none of the brains or thoughtful dimensions that audiences have come to expect from Verhoeven’s visceral-yet-witty brand of cinema.

The "invisible man" idea isn't new, but the graphic nature of this film is certainly a deviously curious twist.

The CGI gives off the rock Scorpion King from the mummy returns vibes, in this dated yet entertaining sci fi horror flick

Fascinating effects, a slightly exploitative plot, good actors and a pretty good score by Jerry Goldsmith make "Hollow Man" an exciting sci-fi thriller. However, you shouldn't expect three-dimensional characters and logic. Paul Verhoeven was right, this film actually feels like it could have been made by any director; it seems too flat, too generic. "Hollow Man" is still great entertainment cinema, but it's quickly forgotten after the credits roll.

The people who gave this 5 stars know exactly why we didn't like this movie they should understand why

Takes me back to Sunday movies on TV — turn it on and you're hooked immediately. Good times and a solid film. Also, it took me 15 years to realize Scary Movie 2 parodies the hell out of this.

This is supposed to be a film about group of scientists experimenting with invisibility but the characters in this film come across more like a bunch of unruly college kids and frat boys. I just couldn't take this film seriously. Nothing more than a Invisible Man rip-off film.

I mean, it makes sense, but it's gross- like the Italian porn version of the invisible man. Then, like a giallo.
