Critics Consensus

Hot Summer Nights is easy on the eyes and clearly indebted to some great films, but its strengths -- including a charismatic young cast -- are often outweighed by its uninspired story.

While Bynum captures the year of Terminator 2: Judgment Day and its transitional early-'90s fashions with melancholic vividness, his paper-thin story of minimal character development ultimately resolves to a shrug. Go to Full Review

Hot Summer Nights will appease fans of Chalamet by his presence alone, but this is a movie that plays like a CW-infused take on the nostalgic drug drama. Go to Full Review

Hot Summer Nights is both groan-inducingly contrived and vapid, its talented young cast wasted on an incoherent script-less a web of betrayal, greed, and adolescent desire than a few dangling threads. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch 3d Hot Summer Nights is a deliberately corny, sun soaked crime drama that blends teen movie energy with low level criminal chaos. It feels playful and edgy without fully committing, giving the film a unique tone. Timothée Chalamet delivers another strong performance, grounding the story as a quiet outsider who slowly transforms into something confident and dangerous. Alex Roe matches that energy well, and the dynamic between the two characters is the film’s strongest asset. Their shift from awkward partnership to dealers drives the story forward. The screenplay is flawed and occasionally forgettable, but it remains creative and fun enough to stay engaging. While it may not leave a lasting impact, the film develops its characters well and offers an entertaining ride. Hot Summer Nights is a solid watch that’s enjoyable in the moment and easy to revisit, even if it never becomes a favorite. See more Melanie O. @melanieogle Nov 12 Enjoyed this movie. Easy, fun watch that will keep you engaged. Storyline starts off rough, gets on track, then randomly a hurricane? Literally and theoretically. Very interesting, definitely a piece of art only some can appreciate. I know I do, but the average brain won’t be able to comprehend the beauty in this story of acceptance, lust, and greed. I only give 4 stars instead of 5 because of the lack of organization in the story line. Movie could use an extra 45 min to fill in some small gaps. See more thiago s @Thiagostone Aug 19 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more Joakim Jun 4 I was quite surprised that this wasn't a sappy teen romance movie, but I suppose seeing the A24 logo combined with Timothée and also Maika Monroe I was intrigued. It's also summer, so it's time. I thought the film was shot, edited and directed with a fun flair, which was entertaining to watch. It had an energy to it, an energy a film about youth is supposed to have. Also was surprised by the crime element of the film, and that this is not a romance film, it's a crime movie with some romance in it on occasion. The movie was pretty funny at times despite being more focused on telling a real story. I do have some questions about logistics, but those questions were forgotten due to movie magic, and me being swept away by the charm of the flick. Good soundtrack, good wardrobe, cool directing in a hot summer night. I like it. Thank you!
