Ed . Aug 29 Is that all there is? When I first watched this picture years ago, I paid superficial attention. Upon closer attention, I note a unpleasant pattern: Robert Evans acknowledges flaws blithely, but never truly owning them, learning from them, or fully discussing them. Two examples. First, his marriages. ALL SEVEN. His longest? The one to Ali MacGraw, less than 4 years. The shortest? Annulment after 9 days. The five others? (Sorry for mimicking Bob) over in less than a year or two. Clearly he learned nothing. Second: his cocaine TRAFFICKING conviction. How does Bob describe it? As a bad decision from being presented with a ‘good deal.’ Trafficking isn't a charge from getting caught with a few grams. Rather, it's due to a large quantity for distribution aka selling to others. Evans sheds no light on details, or even his own habit and overcoming this addiction. His every utterance is that of a superficial bon vivant spreading witticisms at a cocktail party. The sum of all this is underwhelming and sad. Robert Evans produced many fine films. Classics. Despite serious flaws he had great accomplishments. I wish he had the capacity, or contracted this capacity out, to produce a meaningful, reflective autobio rather than this chiffon cake of a movie that lacks substance. See more Johnathon W @Hoppynsc 07/16/2024 Superb documentary that while admittedly biased from Robert Evans's perspective, remains compelling and entertaining all at once. The main appeal is getting Evans to narrate his own story, and while everything is from his perspective, his bias nicely swings both ways. For example, he takes credit for getting "The Godfather" a longer cut (something director Francis Ford Coppola disputes to the day) but also takes the blame for his marriage to Alia McGraw falling apart, stating he neglected her when she was only a plane ride away. Behind the camera, the filmmakers craft an entertaining film that mixes in Robert Evans's life with the numerous brilliant movies he produced, from "Rosemary's Baby" to "The Godfather". A great watch into the life of one of the great producers of film. This guy lived a very interesting life. Jeez talk about being in the right place at the right time. This guy had some crazy fucking luck. Interesting seeing Robert's journey through Hollywood and how he came up and kind of climbed the ladder. Also interesting to see all the battles and fights that happen on a daily basis within showbiz. I really like the way everything was presented throughout the movie. The editing and the way his life was presented made it really entertaining to watch. So interesting to see how Robert was behind all these huge films like Rosemary's Baby, Love Story and The Godfather. Rise and then fall, rise and then fall. This guy went through a lot in his life. Inspirational and motivating. I thought it was a great homage to a producer I didn't know existed until now. Seeing his tumultuous ups and downs throughout his career and life. And that parody at the end that Dustin Hoffman does of Robert was fucking hilarious. You can tell he was close to him and knew him pretty well.
