Set in the near future, unchecked and rampant climate change has caused temperatures and sea levels to rise catastrophically. Only two large continents remain, and billions die during the mass migration to these higher lands. Surrounded by an endless ocean thousands of miles from home, a skeleton crew of soldiers (Bosworth, Kretschmann, Laviscount, and McCann) stand as the last bastion, defending their homeland from an invasion by an enemy they have never seen, monitoring for signs of attack and prepared to sacrifice themselves for the cause. Their tour of duty ended 3 months ago with no relief in sight. Alone and uncertain as to what fate awaits them, the simmering tension amongst the crew escalates when a mysterious boat drifts into range -- is it the help they have been waiting for, or something far more sinister?

“Last Sentinel” is more geared toward delivering a message about humanity’s bent toward paranoia and self-destruction than in producing any tension or thrills. It’s a very heavy film — really too heavy to move.

Last Sentinel is a dreary slog of a movie about four quarreling military people stranded on an outpost in the ocean. This lackluster drama has a thin plot that gets dragged out and tangled up in a lot of nonsense.

The outpost itself is really the fifth character, rusting, hulking, cold, empty, and always wet. It’s well done. But the story dragged on and on, and even a wonderful set couldn’t make up for it. And while it’s sometimes fun to ignore realism in a film and just go along for the ride, I kept ruminating on a couple of key technical items: first, where did all the extra water come from to flood the earth THAT badly? And second, if almost all the land is gone, so is almost all the vegetation. So where is the breathable air coming from? Well acted, excellent set pieces, tedious pacing.

Could be better. Great setting but really confusing. What are the motives of all those ppl? Only the main character is clear. Spoiler: So many plot hole. Why communication did not work? Why the ship follow the beacon? The sergeant is strict to follow the rule but broke many rules.

Synopsis
