The movie is a mess, yet once the thriller plot kicks in, you do start to absorb it as a "silent" film, tuning into the visual atmosphere of stalker fear and rusty chemical entropy.

Mercury may be remembered as the first silent thriller in Indian cinema, but it's far from the heart-stopper we're looking for.

Mercury eventually melts down to the story of human sufferings caused due to corporate greed. And we do leave the theatre with a heavy heart, if not totally frightened by Prabhudheva's thirst for vengeance.

I loved that the protagonists don't get much sympathy because they are the "good guys..."

(Int. Room of Yet-To-Be-Created) Mercury: (in Gold) Blame me, you always do. Urainia: (in Silver) You've been torturing me with my own material! Mercury: And what did you do when I got you a job with the TVA? Urainia: I was only choosing thumbnails for programming... Mercury: And you were choosing images of the actors being engulfed in flames or drowning- Urainia: I wanted to warn anyone who might actually ingest the Mercury Poisoning that these are the effects of anxiety and depression. Anxiety you feel aflame, Depression you feel as if you're drowning-- Mercury: And the still you picked from "The Shining"? Urainia: I think (ponders) It was a bear getting a blow job. Mercury: (throws up hands) We can't put that on IMDb! Urainia: It seemed like a definitive moment at the Time.

Mercury. Neither a strong thriller nor a complete plot around social issues. It is a mild mixture of both. Karthik Subbaraj definitely a ray of hope for Tamil cinema. Realistic night visuals and the background score speak lot in this silent movie. Of course, sometime subtitles too. I love this movie because Karthik tries to denote the mystery as the symbol of social issues with the powerful message "We are fighting against wrong enemies". It makes you sentimal particularly in this period; our own people fighting for banning Sterlite.
