Critics Consensus

Mr. Peabody & Sherman offers a surprisingly entertaining burst of colorful all-ages fun, despite its dated source material and rather convoluted plot.

It's a pleasant, often amusing, family film with lots of kid-friendly jokes and puns but also plenty of references that will go over the heads of the smaller members of the audience.

Everything moves at a brisk pace, the voice cast has plenty of talent, and there's no shortage of witty lines.

The father-son emotional arc is a clunky and strained framework to the zippy entertainment, but like historical accuracy, it's very easy to ignore.

…a Bill and Ted-style romp through the history books, with enough references to stop adults getting bored and plenty of slapstick for kids….

Loaded with references from literature, history and popular culture. I can't imagine a Minion punning, "Marie Antoinette could have kept her head if she had issued an edict to distribute bread to the poor. But you can't have your cake and edict too."

The film boasts a high joke hit rate, unafraid to throw in pre-schooler friendly posterior humour alongside an endless array of puns.

Adult and kid humor that jumps with a dog and his boy through different time periods. Smart.
