Critics Consensus

Darkly funny, fearlessly bold, and thoroughly indulgent, Nymphomaniac finds Lars von Trier provoking viewers with customary abandon.

As it turns out, Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1 is delicately told with both humor and sentimentality. Go to Full Review

Nymphomaniac has an amazingly eclectic cast of weirdos and movie stars acting weird, and their stamina goes a long way toward keeping things sweaty, grotesque, and funny for more than four NC-17-rated hours... Go to Full Review

Joe's process of self-actualization seems contested and inspiring at the same time, and Gainsbourg is really given the screen time to shine. Go to Full Review

Von Trier takes a dark, uncomfortable, and pointedly unsexy journey into the lows of her sexuality, and the result contains everything an audience expects from a von Trier film by way of strong performances, confronting subject matter, and uneven results. Go to Full Review

Lars von Trier makes it easy for us to look past the nudity and explicit sex so we can accept a confident but detached young woman's emotional and physical journey as one guided and defined her addiction. Go to Full Review

Jack F @MovieFan111 1d I'm giving this movie 5 stars because of the pure spectacle and audacity Von Trier had to create something like this. This is my first Von Trier film (what a doozy). It's definitely not to everyone's taste, and like Showgirls, you have to WANT to see it. It's not just some movie you randomly pick on a whim. The story itself explores this not-so-innocent topic with as much innocence as possible, notably the copious amounts of humor sprinkled throughout, which I wasn't really expecting. Unbelievable cast. Seeing Christian Slater in a movie like this was hilarious. I also gave this 5 stars because even though I haven't seen any other Von Trier films, I know most of them are bold shockers. Despite how controversial he might be, we need directors like this to make things interesting and to start conversations. I really don't want to see the second one. It looks more gross than the first. Next up: Breaking the Waves! Heard that's one of his best. Nymphomaniac Vol 1 is a grueling but incredibly intriguing character study, with incredibly skilled writing and great performances from the cast. This may not be von Trier's best work, but it introduces us to some of von Trier's best written and most layered characters and leaves out on a shocking cliff-hanger that left me wanting more.
