Critics Consensus

While it may not make the most of its incredible cast, Out of the Furnace is still so packed with talent that it's hard to turn away.

C-

... we receive an aimless, generic crime drama that cuts itself off at the knees early on and scrambles for relevancy thereafter.

Christian Bale still makes this rather run-of-the-mill proposition appealing, regardless of how oddly unfashionable he may currently be.

The varied performances yield much kindling for warming the heart, especially the scenes between the two brothers.

This tale of brothers who can’t stay out of trouble trots out all the clichés of America in its economic malaise: the lack of blue-collar work, and every genre cliché of Westerns, brothers protecting brothers and the need to take the law into your hands.

Out of the Furnace considers a bleak outlook on economic disparity and how it shapes the lives of those affected, but the film’s methods are obvious and timeworn.

Scott Cooper’s Out of the Furnace (2013) is a criminally underrated entry in modern crime cinema that delivers a heavy, realistic story of brotherhood and vengeance. Set against the bleak backdrop of a dying Rust-Belt town, the film is driven by stellar performances across the board. Christian Bale gives a wonderfully grounded, quiet performance as a struggling steel mill worker, while Casey Affleck brings intense emotional depth as a war veteran haunted by PTSD. Countering them is Woody Harrelson, who delivers a menacing, terrifying turn as a unhinged mountain crime boss. The screenplay moves with a deliberate, tense slow-burn pace, allowing the drama and regional atmosphere to hit with genuine weight. Gritty, tragic, and deeply compelling, it stands as a fantastic watch for fans of realistic thrillers.

Out of the Furnace is a bruised, beautifully atmospheric story about family, loyalty, and the long shadow of bad choices. Its darkness never feels empty. There’s real heart beneath the grit, carried by powerful performances and a deeply human story. A haunting film that finds quiet poetry in a very hard world.

Great film. What really stood out to me was Woody Harrelson’s performance. He completely committed to the role, bringing such a raw, gritty intensity that you feel every scene he’s in. He’s an incredibly talented actor, and this is one of those performances that reminds you just how powerful he can be. I also loved the bond between the two good-hearted brothers. It’s very much an “against the world” story, and while they’re not looking for trouble, they just happen to be the last two people anyone should choose to mess with. Their loyalty to each other gives the film its emotional weight, making the action and drama hit even harder.

One of the slowest most pointless movies to ever exist. It really deserves to be a "cancel the director" type of movie
