Celebrated filmmaker Ira Sachs (Love is Strange) makes a breathtaking return with PASSAGES, a fresh, honest and brutally funny take on messy, modern relationships, starring Franz Rogowski (Great Freedom), Ben Whishaw (Women Talking) and Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue Is the Warmest Colour). Set in Paris, this seductive drama tells the story of Tomas (Rogowski) and Martin (Whishaw), a gay couple whose marriage is thrown into crisis when Tomas begins a passionate affair with Agathe (Exarchopoulos), a younger woman he meets after completing his latest film.

Critics Consensus

Elevated by a remarkable Franz Rogowski performance, Passages adds another smart, deeply humanistic film to director/co-writer Ira Sachs' estimable filmography.

As the dynamics between these three people change and eventually alter the lives of all involved, Sachs depicts the pain and the pleasure of the messes we make when we blindly follow desire.

Caustically amusing, sexy, sad and unflinchingly intense, this is an intimate study of the formation and collapse of a romantic triangle, played with an invigorating absence of sentiment by three actors at the top of their game.

Ira Sachs is a master of the small, delicate gestures that wind up having seismic repercussions in our lives. In Passages, which might be his masterpiece, he fashions the most delectably ruinous of love triangles.

What makes it all work so well is the tiny details packed within each scene; the blocking of actors within a frame, a particular line of dialogue, a glance or a longing look.

The emotional motifs in PASSAGES are splashed with little complication. The characters move and breathe like real people, allowing their lives to surpass the singularity of romance.

As much as this is an aspect of Passages I praise, the briefly polyamorous nature of this triad’s relationship also feels like one of its most unrealized features.

A beautifully filmed look at a self destructive man. The film feels simultaneously deeply intimate and distant - a feeling shared by those who love the central figure.

So many gay men hide behind pretending to like sex with women. In the South, especially, men, knowing they are gay, marry women to divert suspicion. This film shows the harm that does to both the man and the woman. Moreover, because the man is not able to commit fully to either a male partner or a female one, he ends up losing both -- and rides off on a bicycle into the night.

Surprisingly sexy. Franz Rogowski plays the ultimate selfish POS here lol. Poor Ben Wishaw though! I think he got put through the wringer the most in this. Not that Adèle doesn’t either though! Jesus Franz!
