Critics Consensus

Pokémon Detective Pikachu may not take its wonderfully bizarre premise as far as it could have, but this offbeat adaptation should catch most -- if not all -- of the franchise's fans.

I found this weirdly diverting... It's a counterintuitive fit for this character, and I kind of liked that about it.

Pretty well-done, and when it got to the end, the bits that are meant to tug on your heart strings twitch the very top register...

The movie relies more on story than fight scenes such as trainer battles between Pokémon, but when we do see that, it is such a sight.

For hardcore fans, it might be everything you’ve ever wished for, but for fans of the 2000s Pokémon, who stopped following the franchise (...) the numerous Easter Eggs and references might not be enough to overcome the undeniable narrative issues.

A fun adventure that captures the spirit of the Pokémon universe well, with Ryan Reynolds delivering a very charismatic Pikachu. The mystery and plot are simple, but what really spoils the experience is the visual design. The attempt to make the creatures hyper-realistic left many of them simply ugly and strange to look at, somewhat breaking the magic of that world. It's worth watching for the light entertainment, but the visuals are divisive.
