Critics Consensus

Revenge slices and dices genre tropes, working within an exploitation framework while adding a timely -- yet never less than viscerally thrilling -- feminist spin.

Rape. Blood. Desert. Blood. Death. Blood. Drugs. Did I mention blood?Revenge, directed by Coralie Fargeat, is the French rape-revenge film you've been waiting for.

A stunning reinvention of the rape-revenge exploitation film that had me sitting at the edge of my seat first frame to last.

This first feature from French director Coralie Fargeat is an impactful entry into the rape-revenge subgenre that attempts to shift the focus from the male gaze to the female perspective.

Revenge is a promising first film and, with any luck, perhaps Fargeat will approach her next film with more of an eye on instilling some dimensionality into her characters to achieve a stronger sense of catharsis.

Once you transcend the gore, the sheer originality of its dynamics, the ingenious transgression of its point of view (...) makes it a thrill ride of mythic proportions.

Fargeat knows exactly how a camera can leer at a woman's body, then turns that gaze on the men doing the watching. The early dance scene sets the trap, and the rest of the film springs it.

Not much to love here. It is a story told before and told better. The camera work is particularly weak. The action unconvincing, for the most part. It's just meh!!

Revenge, starring Matilda Lutz, is a sun-baked blast of cinematic fury that takes the rape-revenge formula and drives it straight through a wall. Lutz gives a ferocious, physically committed performance, while the direction turns the desert into a neon nightmare of blood, heat, and righteous rage. Stylish, brutal, and unapologetically intense, Revenge is the kind of movie that grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go. It’s not a warning shot, it’s a flamethrower.

What starts with the sleek, sun-drenched feel of a getaway quickly turns into something savage and relentless. The film doesn’t pull its punches, and its visual style gives the violence an almost fever-dream intensity. Lutz is the anchor through it all, vulnerable, furious, and ultimately formidable. A lean, uncompromising thriller that knows exactly how to make an audience wince, then lean closer.

Great cinematography and stunning locations, but the plot is so absurd that by the end we were laughing at how ridiculous it became. Anyone comparing this to Tarantino clearly has no idea what made his films work. At the same time, the movie perfectly reflects the latest trend in Hollywood: female characters portrayed as unstoppable superheroes who effortlessly outperform men despite having little or no training
