Ten years after their high school graduation, Romy (Mira Sorvino) and Michele (Lisa Kudrow) haven't exactly accomplished everything that they set out to do. Despite their strong friendship, their personal and professional lives are still lacking. When they hear of their upcoming high school reunion, they take it as an opportunity to show their classmates how much they've changed -- first by trying to reform themselves, then by creating a lie that eventually spins out of control.

Critics Consensus

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion has an admittedly slight premise, but it's elevated by ample heart, an infectiously playful spirit, and the buoyant chemistry of Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino.

Enjoying Romy and Michele's High School Reunion requires several intersectional caveats - but unfortunately, we could say the same for most films being made today. What the film does offer, albeit hesitatingly, is a love story between two women. Go to Full Review Ryan Gilbey Independent (UK) Dec 15, 2018
Call it Bill and Ted with attitude, or a toothless Clueless: either way, the film uses up its best lines in the first 40 minutes, and only comes to life whenever the splendidly grouchy Janeane Garofalo is on screen. Go to Full Review Carol Buckland CNN.com Jan 5, 2018
If you're in the mood for fluffy fun, it is likely to make you laugh. The flick holds special charms for moviegoers who, like me, were not members of their high school "in" crowd. Go to Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Apr 24, 2026

For all its exaggerated accents, bold fashion, and ‘90s sheen, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion remains a sharp and affectionate comedy about female friendship. Go to Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com Mar 16, 2023

…a funny, likable film with strong female characters…Sorvino and Kudrow have great comic timing, just enough pathos, and two characters who should have spawned a franchise for sure... Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Nov 7, 2022

Crystal M @RTCM2026 Sep 14, 2026 Hillarious, Quirky, Girls Night Movie. The good: *Acting was great all around. *The message of the film was greatly executed using comedy. * The plot was consistent throughout the film. *Absolutely hillarious! The bad: * The film was already so funny, so certain unnecessary swearing and crudeness wasn't nesscary, in my opinion. See more Natasha R @MsNatasha Jun 25, 2026 I thought this movie would only be good in the nostalgic part of my memory; thankfully, it was still great. I love that this movie promotes positive female friendships and highlights that a happy lifestyle is the true measurement for success. It is a relatable message that everyone had someone in high school that seemed to get under your skin; but as we grow up, all of that becomes so petty and inconsequential. See more David K @CherishedCritic Jun 25, 2026 My favourite movie of all time. Such campy fun. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino nail the silliness of the characters. A great camp comedy.
