After Japanese forces torpedo his submarine during World War II, commanding officer "Rich" Richardson (Clark Gable) is placed in charge of the USS Nerka. The crew on board the Nerka -- led by Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster), who had been passed over for promotion when Richardson was brought in -- is openly hostile to their new commander, especially when it becomes clear that Richardson's sole obsession is finding and destroying the Japanese ship that sank his old vessel.

The terrifically tense submarine genre starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster still pings with its authentic claustrophobic setting and mano a mano standoff between captain and XO. Go to Full Review Edward Porter Sunday Times (UK) Sep 26, 2022

Johnathon W @Hoppynsc Sep 22, 2026 First rate submarine thriller thanks to two fantastic star turns and tight direction. The cast is superb, especially the lead of Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster as the captain and executive officer of the submarine, who butt heads over how best to command. Behind the camera, Robert Wise delivers a superb war thriller and probably one of the best submarine movies ever made, thanks to some authentic details (some of the cast, like Don Rickles, actually served in the navy). A true classic all the way. See more G L. @RT09869090 May 25, 2026 Two of Hollywood's all-time greatest actors come together & fight the Japanese in submarine warfare during WWII. See more rex W @RT11010153 Apr 13, 2026 There is never a dull moment in"Run Silent, Run Deep." It is a harrowing submarine tale about revenge and dedication. Burt Lancaster and especially Clark Gable are at the top of their game. It is one of the top 25 war movies of all time. See more Russ G @RT78760655 Jan 30, 2026 A compelling underwater saga, lifted out of the rut by the casting of the King of Hollywood opposite Burt Lancaster. Captain Ahab had his white whale; Gable has his Bungo Pete. The story is rather far-fetched as there would be no way in the circumstances of the war to track a particular enemy destroyer, and the sub's commander would never be given the leeway to pursue a personal vendetta at the cost of strategic objectives. Still, this one stands out due to the fine performances of the principles and supporting characters. This was regular Saturday matinee TV fodder for decades. See more Leaburn O @RT35452347 Nov 6, 2025 Whilst not exactly Das Boot, it is still a solid submariner war thriller with elements of tension and some good character conflicts. Watched on DVD.
