Critics Consensus

Taking a stab at modern horror movies and missing more than it cuts, Scary Movie's self-referential callbacks and tired gags make for a stunted return to what was already a hit-or-miss franchise.

Audience Says

Laden with nostalgia and OG ribaldry, Scary Movie delivers stupid, good fun that’s appropriately inappropriate.

The gentrification of genre is a real and consequential development, and yet the prevailing feeling watching the latest Scary Movie is of vague disinterest, and also narrowly missed opportunities.

The new “Scary Movie” is stuck somewhere between then and now, with one foot in the early-millennial absurdism that spawned the series’ most beloved gags, and the other planted way too firmly in quote-unquote edgy humor.

We laugh because we’re defeated. That requires more effort than Scary Movie is usually willing to expend, but every once in a while, it gets there.

... in lockstep with what fans expect of an entry, dropping reference upon reference like t-shirt cannons at a game, but, instead of targeted, precision shots, it’s more like the audience is invited to a pop culture bukkake session.

Scary Movie is another unfortunate entry in the long-dormant franchise that struggles greatly to get even a chuckle with its non-stop deluge of lazy, crude, cringing, and worst of all, unfunny jokes & gags.

Scary Movie still delivers some very funny moments, but too many jokes land as foul balls instead of home runs, leaving the sixth installment well behind the franchise's best.

I wasn't expecting Scary Movie to reinvent comedy. I wanted something stupid, inappropriate and funny, and for the most part that's what I got. The biggest thing working in its favor is seeing the old crew again. Cindy, Brenda, Shorty and Ray immediately bring back that early-2000s Scary Movie energy, and there was enough ridiculous humor and nostalgia to keep me entertained. Not every joke lands, and some of the references feel like the movie is trying a little too hard to prove it knows what's popular now. But this franchise was never supposed to be sophisticated. It's supposed to make fun of horror movies, cross the line and make you laugh at something you probably shouldn't. It's nowhere near the original at its best, but I laughed enough. Sometimes stupid fun is exactly what you came for.

Didn’t like what it showed really. Kinda confused about it. Actors in it were amazing and some of the comedy was funny but the movie not my favorite
