Who is Frank Gehry, and what makes the rule-breaking architect tick? That's what filmmaker -- and friend of Gehry -- Sydney Pollack aims to find out in this documentary. Pollack is afforded extensive access into the life and work of the man who designed such buildings as the Guggenheim of Spain and the Disney Concert Hall in California. Through interviews with fellow friends and admirers, Pollack examines the 77-year-old's creative process and his rise to prominence in the world of architecture.

Critics Consensus

This affectionate, casually framed portrait of the acclaimed architect reveals him to be an engaging, likeable subject.

Pollack is more interested in the mysteries of the creative process, and his studies of Gehry's buildings, deftly edited by Karen Schmeer, capture their dramatic sense of movement and resolution. Go to Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard Jun 29, 2007

The result is a persuasive movie which proves beyond doubt that at least some geniuses are intensely practical as well as intuitive. Go to Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Jun 29, 2007

While Pollack continually favours celebrity gush over objective analysis, the shots of Gehry's buildings - the Guggenheim in Bilbao being the centrepiece - and his stunning use of light do make a case for him as a genuine visionary. Pollack is not a particularly introspective documentary maker; he is content to let his subject merely expound and ramble at length. However, in Gehry's case, this actually works. He is a good raconteur: witty and amiable. Go to Full Review Enrique Buchichio Uruguay Total Oct 13, 2007

(...) Un documental que debería ver todo aquel que alguna vez haya sentido la necesidad o las ganas de crear algo, ya sea una pieza de cerámica, un edificio o una película. Go to Full Review Total Film Jun 29, 2007

The questioning is skin-deep and Pollack's handheld DV approach doesn't show the buildings at their best. Go to Full Review Read all reviews
