Critics Consensus

Something in the Dirt reaffirms Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as sci-fi storytellers with a distinctive -- and darkly alluring -- vision.

Something in the Dirt has the gritty DIY-vibe of the no-budget world from which it sprang, and is both thought-provoking and crazy-making, just like the mood it presents.

Ultimately, Something in the Dirt doesn’t quite convince as a genuine mystery -- and it doesn’t seem to be meant to. Having fun with the artifice of it all seems far more to the point.

What it has in abundance is genuine sadness. Benson and Moorhead direct and shoot their film smartly, but their performances are what ground it and give it shape.

Something in the Dirt‘s best moments and its faults come from this central relationship, which both offers a kind of bewildered comedy and a too-familiar depiction of a friendship undone.

Something In The Dirt might be a tad overlong but otherwise it's great to see Moorhead & Benson back in their roots crafting another absorbing sci-fi mystery on a shoestring budget.

Where sightings of the Blair Witch largely propel forward, DIRT digs further down on the manipulation and coercion of filmmaking.

I loved all the hidden clues & signs throughout this low budget sci fi gem. The scribbling on the trainers, the constant lighting of cigarettes, the clicking of the pen - to try and exert some control, marking reality, tracking change, grounding habits - to distract from the chaos of everything around them. I also appreciate the subtle nod to The Endless when they opened the drawer. A must watch especially if you enjoyed the Endless - this is way better & gripping throughout.

I've watched way too many low budget sci fi movies. Most have sucked. This one didn't, but don't expect Aliens.

Pointless. Kept waiting for something to happen and it really never did. Waste of time.

It was boring, but pretty good, like a boring Christopher Nolan film.

It was boring at times, but it was really compelling and it had such a realistic feel to it. I definitely recommend it for sci-fi and paranormal fans!

Slow moving but in an intellectual way. Great dialog and cinematography make the viewer question if this is an actual documentary. Nothing like Blair Witch but still has that kind of vide. Very chill and enjoyable with subtle comedy.
