Impossible, haughty, not likable, but sometimes rather admirable in its context. Go to Full Review

People who believe that all that smoke must indicate one hell of a fiery movie might be rather dismayed by the movie itself. Go to Full Review
Richard Brody The New Yorker Jan 31, 2022
For all its horror, the film has an exuberant, hedonistic excitement (including a sexual showdown in a Hell's Angels den); Sweetback's spirit of outrage and revolt gives rise to bitter, exasperated ironies. Go to Full Review

The unusual mix of agitprop and exploitation is directed in a jagged style that recalls what Jean-Luc Godard was doing in France and set to a funky score performed by Earth, Wind, and Fire... Go to Full Review

Farr more overtly political and experimental than anything subsequently bracketed in that ["Blaxploitation"] genre. Go to Full Review

Cherish H @RT08966500 28 min ago It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It is the type of movie where I would watch the beginning of the trailer and wish the trailer was all ready over. See more Mariann F @MariannK 1 day ago I would give this a 3 star rating. I thought it was interesting and different but honestly it was kind of hard for me to follow at times. I liked the message behind it and some of the visuals but it wasnt really a movie id watch willingly. See more JO3WY T @RT70289803 2 days ago Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song felt raw and different from the other movies we watched. I liked how Sweetback fights to survive while the police chase him. The music and quick editing make the movie feel tense and chaotic. Some parts were hard to follow, but I think its style helps show his fear and the unfair treatment he faces. See more Audrey L @RT26935890 4 days ago I thought this movie was a waste of my time until I read more on Melvin Van Peebles and overall message from the film. This is an example of taking independent filmmaking to the next level so I have a lot of respect for all the actors/actresses. I feel like I was losing the plot in some scenes due to the insane sexual encounters. Besides trying to get over the awkwardness of the constant nudity. I took this movie as a way to express the struggle for freedom and resistance against oppression. I liked the chaos and violence between Sweetback and the cops. I'm not familiar with any of the songs I heard throughout the movie but I think they were cool and matched the vibe of the scenes. I weirdly remember my HIST 270 professor asking us if we watched "Sweet sweetback baadasssss song" and not a single person raising their hand yet laughing at the name of the movie. Also, moving forward I will not be watching any of my assigned CTVA films around others. See more Chase B @RT59450598 Sep 24, 2026 I don't think this a particularly bad movie, but it definitely could have been filmed better in my opinion. the editing, sound design and other problems really take away from what could have been a much better movie. But still, not so bad. See more Jacob_herrera. T @RT19497102 Sep 23, 2026 This movie definitely isn’t a top-tier movie, that’s for sure. I liked the storyline and plot. Even when I read about it before seeing the movie, I thought it could be an interesting one, but the execution throughout just wasn’t there. I’m giving it three stars for the plot and the music. I actually enjoyed the music played throughout the movie, and I find it fascinating that Melvin Van Peebles had Earth, Wind & Fire perform on the soundtrack before they were famous! In conclusion: great plot, great soundtrack, mediocre execution. I’m not sure I would willingly watch it again. See more Read all reviews
