Prehistoric family the Croods live in a particularly dangerous moment in time. Patriarch Grug (Nicolas Cage), his mate, Ugga (Catherine Keener), teenage daughter Eep (Emma Stone), son Thunk (Clark Duke) and feisty Gran (Cloris Leachman) gather food by day and huddle together in a cave at night. When a more evolved caveman named Guy (Ryan Reynolds) arrives on the scene, Grug is distrustful, but it soon becomes apparent that Guy is correct about the impending destruction of their world.

Critics Consensus

While it may not be as (ahem) evolved as the best modern animated fare, The Croods will prove solidly entertaining for families seeking a fast-paced, funny cartoon adventure.

The Croods isn't particularly smart, but it has just enough wit to keep us engaged and just enough speed to keep us from feeling restless.

It captures the wonder (and more gently, the anxiety) of discovery time and time again. And the filmmakers have a hoot playing with the Croods' encounters with, as well as their misunderstandings of, all things new.

As family viewing, it's pleasant enough: primitive, yes, but in a digitally sophisticated way that's boisterous, funny and will no doubt sell a lot of toys.

Some of the action and humour might be a little crude, but this caveman comedy is guaranteed to elicit plenty of laughs from young and old.

No amount of chuckle-worthy voicework or pretty pictures can make up for how predictable it all feels.

"The Croods" provides an extremely hopeful message of surviving into the future. Little ones won't get it intellectually, but will on a visceral level, while being thoroughly entertained by all manner of fun prehistoric flora and fauna.

Though geological implausibility pushes the plot, as the extent of the film’s exceptionally stunning animation, at the center’s a metaphorical odyssey of family prehistorically examined meaningfully upon developmental discoveries, in which hilarity ensues and a heart formulaically blossoms at the uplifting climax, thanks to the energetically comedic cast in fulfilling the characterized dimensional edges.
