Critics Consensus

Content to coast on jump scares rather than tap into its story's creepy potential, The Curse of La Llorona arrives in theaters already broken.

The performances are good, but I wanted more complexity for the original folk tale of La Llorona.

A formulaic slab of supernatural dirge destined to be forgotten by year's, or perhaps even month's, end.

...A predictable and slow jumpscare movie that failed to make me care about anyone at all. I would have been just as happy had La Llorona eaten the whole family.

I completely checked out by the halfway mark, occasionally made to sit upright by the obnoxiously loud noises the film mistakes for scares.

It’s not nearly as horrible as The Nun, and honestly, that’s a good compliment for such a typical, cliche horror flick. Michael Chaves truly saves what could have been a disaster with another director.

One of the worst films in the *Conjuring* universe. Aside from the good performances by the children and the mother of the deceased boys, the rest is terrible. I couldn't connect with the healer or Anna. Ill-timed jokes, dour characters, and foolish, wrongheaded actions—all wrapped in a shallow script that wasted the potential of such rich folklore.

Not a good horror movie not a bad horror movie. Solid plot but not super scary.

Pretty good - better than I expected, and I liked the Conjuring tie in!

Thoroughly unoriginal plot points and scares with half-baked conclusions. However, if you're just looking for a James Wan typical jump-scare factory, this is the movie for you - just don't expect too much in the way of quality film making.
