Critics Consensus

An affecting story powerfully told, The Last Black Man in San Francisco immediately establishes director Joe Talbot as a filmmaker to watch.

It's an independent film with a difference, but not as emotionally engaging as you'd really like it to be.

Fails and Talbot's writing follows no script doctor's convention. The direction reveals no obvious influences.

It's less of a rallying cry against gentrification than a rumination on the kind of pained acceptance those who suffer its effects must face.

This cinematic debut from Joe Talbot may be an imperfect film, but it has so many distinguishable characteristics and particular eccentricities that it becomes quite impossible to compare it to anything else.

This is a film that requires San Francisco to feel like its own character, and director Joe Talbot captures the city landscapes with such cinematic immensity.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco is an auspicious first feature, and Talbot and Fails are young artists who posses the talent to convey their ambivalent feelings towards, and the inherent poetry of, “The City by the Bay.”

Artistic. Storyline dealt with a number of such issues including gentrification and community abandonment, mental health, drug abuse and its impact on the family to name a few. Great to see this young filmmaker get his shot beyond The Sundance film festival, thanks to Brad Pitt. I certainly look forward to his next project!

Solid performances by the entire cast and much of what you viewed in the movie is no different that what's happening today in San Francisco.
